Farm Tractor Safety Courses Being Offered

2013 Farm Tractor Safety Course

teen on tractroParticipants will learn how to handle tractors and equipment safely, how to identify hazards, and how to minimize the chances of accidents. The course is open to all adults and youth interested, but priority will be given to youth ages 14 to 16. This course is required for 14 and 15 year olds who plan to operate farm equipment for hire on farms other than their own. A Federal Certificate of Training will be issued at the completion of the course after successful completion of the written test and driving course and with attendance requirements met.

UMaine Extension Offering Farming in Maine Course

FALMOUTH – A four-week course, “So You Want to Farm in Maine?” is being offered by the University of Maine Cooperative Extension in Falmouth for experienced and prospective farmers on four consecutive Tuesdays, Feb. 5–26.

Classes are 6:30–9 p.m. at the University of Maine Learning Center, 75 Clearwater Drive, Suite 104 in Falmouth. A $50 per-farm fee includes course materials.

Topics of discussion include selecting and evaluating farm enterprises, keeping production and financial records with QuickBooks, and doing market research for farm products and services. Classes will include panel discussions about available resources for farmers.

Attendance is limited to 25 participants and preregistration is required. University of Maine Cooperative Extension Offering Soils Management, Enhancement Series

The University of Maine Cooperative Extension is offering a five-part weekly series beginning this month on the physical, chemical and biological properties of soil, soil management, and long-term enhancement of soil organic matter.

The series is a response to farmers’ increasing requests for more in-depth training on managing soils for long-term health and production, in addition to the exploration of options and recommendations for soil amendments, cover cropping and crop rotations, according to Frank Wertheim, UMaine Extension educator in the York County office in Springvale.

The series will provide management strategies for optimum crop production and long-term soil health. Classes are scheduled from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Tuesday evenings, Oct. 23-Nov. 20 in the Nasson Room of the Anderson Learning Center, 21 Bradeen St. in Springvale.
