As a recipient of a National Science Foundation ADVANCE grant, UMaine’s Rising Tide Center shares the ADVANCE Program goal of “increasing the representation and advancement of women in the academic science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers, thereby contributing to the development of a more diverse science and engineering workforce” at the University of Maine. To this end, we are providing opportunities to foster the professional development of women in the STEM and social and behavioral sciences (SBS) at the University. These grants are aimed at reducing isolation and encouraging the building of collaborative, collegial relationships across the UMaine system, the state and nationwide, thereby facilitating retention, promotion and advancement of women faculty. Grantees will present their findings or report on funded activities at an annual networking conference. Funds will be available to faculty in STEM-SBS fields, and to others who directly promote ADVANCE-related efforts.
Professional Development Grants:
o Research Seed Grants – Funding travel/collaboration building, and research assistance including release time, summer salaries, supplies and equipment
o Leadership Development – Funding training opportunities including release time, workshop attendance, visiting scholars, and travel
Climate Awards
o Department Awards – Funding activities aimed at developing supportive climates in departments and schools including development of fair and equitable faculty assessment processes, updating evaluative procedures and ensuring guidelines are employed consistently.
