The Advance Initiative benefits UMaine campus-wide. The grant is directed at the retention and advancement of women faculty in STEM and Social-Behavioral Sciences, but advancement toward this goal benefits all UMaine faculty. Specific ADVANCE initiatives such as the Professional Development Grant programs, leadership and mentoring programs, and professional development activities benefit all regardless of gender. The University of Maine understands and embraces the importance of diversifying our faculty to enrich the larger university community. With support of the grant, the UMaine community has reviewed and improved hiring, mentoring, peer-reveiw, and promotion and tenure processes.
Dr. Jeff Hecker is the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost, and previously served as the Principal Investigator for the ADVANCE Rising Tide project at UMaine. He continues his oversight of the Rising Tide Center, and currently serves as the chair of the Center’s advisory board, the Provost’s Council on Advancing Women Faculty (PCAWF).
