Nov. 13, 2013 – Advancing to Full Professor.  This popular panel discussion will help faculty understand the process, and plan their application for promotion to full professor. Bring questions for your faculty colleagues who have successfully navigated the promotion process. Panelists include Karen Horton (Mechanical Engineering Technology), Mike Kinnison (School of Biology & Ecology), Jennifer Moxley (English), and  Michael Wittmann (Physics and College of Education).

Nov. 8, 2013 – Open Access Scholarship: Policy, Publication, Peer Review. Presented by Dr. Peter Suber of the Harvard Open Access Project. Join Dr. Suber for  a conversation about emerging open access policies that could affect your scholarly publishing and your peer evaluation. Presented by The Graduate School, Fogler Library Digital Commons and the School of Forest Resources.

Oct. 23, 2013 – Promotion and Tenure Panel. The first in a two-part series on promotion and tenure designed to enhance understanding of the processes for new and pre-tenure faculty. Facilitators include Jeff Hecker (Executive VP for Academic Affairs and Provost), Steve Butterfield, (Prof. of Education and Special Education), Irv Kornfield (Prof. of Biology and Molecular Forensics), and Dan Sandweiss (Dean and Associate Provost for Graduate Studies).

Sept. 19, 2013 – Fostering a Collegial DepartmentDr. Robert Cipriano, author of “Facilitating a Collegial Department in Higher Education: Strategies for Success,”  will provide the tools for promoting civility among your faculty colleagues. Join us on Sept. 19th to develop your skills and consider strategies you can use to create an atmosphere of mutual respect. August 29, 2013New Faculty Orientation. This annual event has been expanded to include a continental breakfast, a welcome from our campus president, an informational fair, and an overview of teaching resources at UMaine. Join us in helping our new faculty get off to a great start!

May 22, 2013 – Dept. Chair & Unit Director Workshop. This  module was developed by experienced faculty in an effort to support colleagues who serve, or will serve, in administrative roles. Morning activities will be geared to new or incoming chairs, while the afternoon discussion will include sharing of expertise from experienced administrators and resource personnel from HR, EAP and Equal Opportunity. Lunch will be provided at noon for those who attend the morning or afternoon sessions, or those who join us for the entire day.

May 14, 2013 – Advancing Women in Academia: 2nd Annual Networking  Conference. This day-long event seeks to connect women faculty from higher education institutions across Maine.  The schedule features keynote speaker Dr. Jaime Lester of George Mason University, and a poster session that supports informal discussion of research and scholarly projects.  Afternoon workshops will focus on topics relevant to women striving to succeed in academia.

Participants will include faculty from each of the UMS campuses, Colby, Bates, and Bowdoin colleges, the University of New England, Husson University, and Maine’s community colleges. Out of the Shadows: Gender, Identity, and History

Celebrate women’s history with creative performances including film and theater performances, and presentations and panel discussions highlighting the diverse obstacles women have overcome in Maine, across the nation and around the world. Feb 14, 2013 – My grant proposal was not funded: Now what? Join this workshop for new and junior faculty intended to identify effective strategies for obtaining external support for your work. Linda Silka, director of the Margaret Chase Smith Policy Center will facilitate. Bring your proposal and reveiwers’ comments and your questions for a lively session that will help you identify the best way to move forward.
