Travelers and Madmen in Literature
Travelers are forever abandoning complacent lives in search of experience and adventure. When their quests turn to obsession, however, what begins as a thrilling journey can turn into a nightmarish reality–and madness. This fast-paced course in British and American literature explores the personal motivations and the physical, political, and cultural barriers that can pit travelers against their companions, families, and ultimately their own psyches as they try to reach unknown destinations. The course requires weekly critical response essays as well as on-line discussions–no madness required– to further explore the themes and implications of the literature.
