Victims in the Workplace: How Domestic Violence Perpetrators Impact Employment

In Maine, a 2003 study conducted jointly by the Maine Department of Labor and by Family Crisis Services (the domestic violence project for Cumberland & Sagadahoc counties) 78% of perpetrators of relationship abuse used workplace resources to harass and threaten their victims; 75% of supervisors knew of an offender_s arrest but only 15% reminded them that domestic violence is a crime, and 18% bailed out the offender; 48% of perpetrators reported difficulty concentrating at work due to perpetration; 19% of offenders had a workplace accident or near miss.

According to a 2004 study conducted jointly by the Maine Department of Labor and by Family Crisis Services, 98% of victims of relationship abuse reported difficulty concentrating due to the abuse; 83% were harassed at work by their abuser; 78% reported being late to work due to the abuse; 47% were assaulted before work; 46% reported that the abuser stalked them at the workplace; 13% reported being assaulted at work; 60% lost their job due to the abuse (of these, 43% were fired, 57% quit).

Which states permit survivors of domestic violence to quit work and receive unemployment insurance?

Eighteen states have passed new laws that explicitly allow survivors of domestic violence to leave their jobs due to the violence. These are California , Colorado , Connecticut , Delaware , Maine , Massachusetts , Minnesota , Montana , Nebraska , New Hampshire , New Jersey , New York , North Carolina , Oregon , Rhode Island , Washington , Wisconsin and Wyoming . In the 2001 and 2002 legislative sessions, bills have been introduced in Arizona , Georgia , Hawaii , Iowa , Maryland , New Mexico , North Dakota , Tennessee , Vermont , and West Virginia .
