Friday – Poultry 1 – session 1; Poultry 2 – session 2; Advanced Poultry – session 3; Poultry Showmanship Show – session 4 – for youth of all ages (limit of 12 youth per session)
Poultry 1: Pollorum testing of all chickens to be shown (you must have 10% of your flock tested each year), care of chickens, bathing, and grooming for show.
Poultry 2: Health problems with chickens (parasites and such), and housing.
The poultry track is for youth who have poultry or would like more information about keeping and showing poultry before they get some. If you have poultry, bring your easiest to handle bird, or the one you will use for showmanship. If you cannot bring a bird, there will be some extras you can use. Session One will be Anatomy, Care, and Bathing Your Bird; bring a dishpan the right size for you bird to stand in for bathing. Session Two will be Housing and Feeding Poultry, and Egg Grading and Candling. Session Three will be Poultry Showmanship; learn how to show your bird and participate in a 4-H poultry show. The birds you bring must be blood-tested and rated Pullorum Typhoid Clean, or be first generation from stock meeting this requirement. Exhibitor must show proof of testing. Any bird showing signs of disease or vermin shall be removed immediately. Pigeons do not need to be state tested. NOTE: Waterfowl now need to be tested.
