Eastern States Bus Trip – September 27, 2014

It’s time to reserve seats for the buses traveling to Eastern States Exposition (ESE or also called the “Big E”) in West Springfield, Massachusetts for Maine Day on Saturday, September 27, 2014.

This one-day trip is sponsored by the Maine Trustees of the Eastern States Exposition to encourage Maine 4-Hers who don’t presently participate in events at ESE to see the activities that go on for 4-H youth in hopes to bolster their enthusiasm to participate in the future.  Two buses are reserved for us and the northernmost bus will originate in Bangor and they will stop at several points on I-95.  Seats fill up quickly, and we will begin taking registrations immediately.

All youth must go with a chaperone, but because this event is primarily for youth; seats are limited to no more than two adults per child.  The bus ride and admission to the “Big E” are free, but all individuals on this trip are expected to march in the parade at 5 pm.  It works well if you wear a 4-H t-shirt if you have one, and for clubs to bring their club banner to display during the parade.

Items you might want to bring along with you are: light snacks, water, a good book, Rated G movies (there is a DVD player on the bus), a pillow, and a blanket.  There will be rest stops along the way.  Other items to consider bringing: clothing to identify your club, a comfortable pair of walking shoes, a hat with a visor, sun glasses, sun screen, a back pack, personal spending money, a camera, and a watch.  If you have a cell phone, it will be helpful for logistics.  Please include your cell phone number when you register.

Please leave valuable items at home.  We will not be responsible for lost or stolen items.  Bus stops will be determined based on location of riders.  Reservations must be made in writing or by e-mail to:
Jessy Brainerd
103B Libby Hall
University of Maine
Orono, ME 04469-5741
jessica.brainerd@maine.edu

When you register, please give the name, age (for adults, just state “adult”), address, home phone and cell phone number of each person in your group.  Reservations are due by Friday, September 5, 2014 (call after this date to check on seat availability).  A confirmation letter will be sent to you two weeks before the trip giving you the time and pick up location.  Pick up will be bright and early in the morning, but the return trip will be staggered.  One bus will leave right after the parade; the second bus will leave after the evening events.  So when you register, let us know if you’d like to return on the early or late bus (we will try to assign you to your preferred bus, however, there are a limited number of seats on each).

Volunteers are needed to serve as Bus Monitors.  Bus Monitors will serve as the contact person for other passengers on their bus, and will make sure everyone gets back on the bus at the rest stop.  If you’d be willing to serve in this capacity, please let us know when you sign up.

If you have questions, please contact Jessy Brainerd at 800-287-0274 or 581-3877.

UMaine Extension Publishes Bulletin on Raising Rabbits for Meat

University of Maine Cooperative Extension has released a bulletin to inform people interested in becoming backyard producers of meat rabbits.

Gary Anderson, a UMaine Extension animal and bio-sciences specialist, authored Backyard Production of Meat Rabbits in Maine. Topics in the 15-page bulletin include the Maine environment, breeds and selection, reproduction, health management, predator control, market outlets and promotions, dressing out a rabbit fryer and recipes.

The popularity of raising domestic meat rabbits is growing in Maine, Anderson says, adding that benefits include nutritious food at a relatively low cost, potential for extra income and an educational experience for the family.

More information, bulletin copies for $1.50 each and free downloads are available from the UMaine Extension Publication Catalog or by contacting the UMaine Extension Publications Office at 207.581.3792 or extension.orders@maine.edu.

We would like to say a huge “Thank You” to all of the absolutely amazing volunteers who made this year’s Maine 4-H Days one of our best!!! Thanks, also, to the 4-Hers and their parents who showed us exactly why we love working for such an incredible program! As always, we would like to heartily thank the Maine 4-H Foundation for their continued support of Maine 4-H Days, and the other great   4-H programs and events that happen through the year.

Maine Fair Season Insurance

Maine fair season is almost here. Most Maine fairs now require proof of insurance in order to exhibit livestock at their fairs.  Proof of insurance usually is requested for individuals including the exhibitor (4-H member), owner of the animal, and anyone who may be responsible for maintaining the animal at the event (e.g. parents or volunteers).

Some fairs no longer allow homeowner insurance policies.  Please check your specific fair to see what they accept.  Most fairs do accept the MALE Insurance.

Maine Association of Livestock Exhibitors (MALE) annual membership renewal is in June. Last year’s membership ends on June 30.  A benefit of being a member of this association includes liability insurance at specific events, including Maine fairs.  Please refer to the events that it does cover for the state.  Also, as a clarification, as of 7/1/2011, this insurance is a display and exhibitors policy; therefore the following activities are not covered:  equine racing, trotting, barrel racing, steeplechase, rodeos, and team penning. Any and all ox, steer, pony and horse rides, wagon, sleigh, and hay rides and dog and sheep dog activities.  More information is available at: http://www.mainelivestockexhibitors.org/index.html.

Early Registration for Maine 4-H Days Ends June 2nd

Maine 4-H Days will take place June 20 – 22, 2014 at the Windsor Fairgrounds, and the registration materials are available online. As always, workshops are assigned on a first come, first serve basis, so be sure to register early. If you do not have online access, please contact your local county office for paper copies of the forms. If you register prior to the June 2nd early registration deadline, the cost is $5 per person, with a maximum of $15 per family.  If you register after the deadline, the price increases to $7 per person, with a maximum of $20 per family.

We are in need of volunteers willing to help with all aspects of the event.  Last year, Maine 4-H Days brought almost 400 individuals to the Windsor Fairgrounds, and we are preparing for even greater numbers for 2014. Volunteers are needed for: presenter assistance, office/registration help, being crafty in the Creativity Area, set-up, cleanup, and more.  We request that one member of each group sign up for a minimum of one volunteer shift.

Along with many of your favorite returning workshops (Archery, Dog Camp, Field Skills for the Forest, Cheese Making, Lego® Robotics, etc.), there are a ton of awesome new workshops this year: Make Your Own Hula Hoop, Line Dancing, and so much more! All of the workshops, and their descriptions, are posted at: http://umaine.edu/4h/youth/4-h-events/maine-4-h-days/.  As workshops fill up, the forms available online will note any workshops that are “full” on the registration forms.

If you are interested in volunteering in any capacity, please contact Jessy Brainerd at jessica.brainerd@maine.edu or 207.581.3877.
