Maine 4-H Days will take place June 20 – 22, 2014 at the Windsor Fairgrounds, and the registration materials are available online. As always, workshops are assigned on a first come, first serve basis, so be sure to register early. If you do not have online access, please contact your local county office for paper copies of the forms. If you register prior to the June 2nd early registration deadline, the cost is $5 per person, with a maximum of $15 per family.  If you register after the deadline, the price increases to $7 per person, with a maximum of $20 per family.

We are in need of volunteers willing to help with all aspects of the event.  Last year, Maine 4-H Days brought almost 400 individuals to the Windsor Fairgrounds, and we are preparing for even greater numbers for 2014. Volunteers are needed for: presenter assistance, office/registration help, being crafty in the Creativity Area, set-up, cleanup, and more.  We request that one member of each group sign up for a minimum of one volunteer shift.

Along with many of your favorite returning workshops (Archery, Dog Camp, Field Skills for the Forest, Cheese Making, Lego® Robotics, etc.), there are a ton of awesome new workshops this year: Make Your Own Hula Hoop, Line Dancing, and so much more! All of the workshops, and their descriptions, are posted at: http://umaine.edu/4h/youth/4-h-events/maine-4-h-days/.  As workshops fill up, the forms available online will note any workshops that are “full” on the registration forms.

If you are interested in volunteering in any capacity, please contact Jessy Brainerd at jessica.brainerd@maine.edu or 207.581.3877.

Quiz Bowl is a questions game similar to Jeopardy. Two teams with four players each, use electric buzzers to answer questions and gain points. The questions are all horse related and can range from diseases and anatomy to tack and riding disciplines.

Hippology consists of several components including a written test, visual slides, identification of diagrams, horse judging, and a team problem.

Every year, a quiz bowl/ hippology tryouts is held for the Maine State Quiz Bowl team. Four 4-Hers and one alternate are chosen to be on each team. 4-Hers selected to be on the teams are expected to attend practice sessions, and compete both regionally in New Hampshire and nationally in Kentucky.

In order to try-out for the Quiz Bowl/Hippology team, you must be enrolled in 4-H and be 14-18 as of Jan. 1st. However, ALL 4-Hers and volunteers are welcome and encouraged to come to quiz bowl/hippology study sessions. Meetings will be held once a month on Friday evening. You can participate in the study sessions by coming to Libby Hall at the University of Maine in Orono, or by arranging a skype or poly-com connection to Orono from a place convenient for you. Please contact the Quiz Bowl/hippology coordinator to proceed on the latter.

To try-out for the Quiz Bowl or Hippology teams, 4-Hers must take the written tryout test which will be offered at your local county extension office from Feb. 16th-March 14th. The first Quiz Bowl/ Hippology study session, will be held March 28th at 6pm.

If you are interested in trying out for the team, or just want information please contact the quiz bowl/hippology coordinator:         Edie Kershner ediekershner@yahoo.com or (207)322-4601.
